Have those men been caught: Delhi gangrape victim asks

As doctors from AIIMS Trauma Centre joined the Safdarjung Hospital team to monitor the "critical but stable" condition of the 23-year-old paramedic student who was gangraped and tortured in a moving bus in Delhi before being thrown out, her brother said she asked him if those who assaulted her had been caught.

"There was no written communication... a tube in her windpipe was being changed before surgery, so she could speak to us for a while. She asked if the culprits had been caught, and I said yes," he said.

He said he told her there was public outrage, calls for hanging. "She nodded but did not say anything. She keeps asking if people, her friends, classmates know about her condition... she is worried that everyone knows... she keeps asking if our parents are fine," he said.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: "We are ready to take her to any part of the world for better treatment. But to take her abroad, her condition has to improve as she is in a very critical condition."

The woman's platelet and white blood cell count have decreased but other vital parameters remain stable.

Dr B D Athani, medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, said: "After her second surgery on Wednesday morning, the night was uneventful. She is stable and conscious, but on complete ventilator support. Her other vital organs including the kidney, heart and brain are doing fine."

Dr Athani said doctors from AIIMS Trauma Centre were called in for an opinion, given their expertise in trauma care.

Dr M C Misra, chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre, said: "We are in constant touch with Safdarjung doctors." He said though the woman was critical but stable, infection was an "impending threat" in injuries as grievous as she sustained. At least 7-10 days of observation was needed before any procedure can be planned, he said. Doctors from the critical care unit said that she had contracted slight jaundice.
