The Centre is considering letting Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani, 77, travel to Pakistan to meet his ailing son as part of its efforts to open a political dialogue in the Valley.
Unlike other Hurriyat leaders, Geelani — under arrest since June 7 — has never been to Pakistan. He studied in Lahore before Partition. Passports were issued to Geelani, his younger son and wife byut these expired in March 2008.
Sources said Geelani’s elder son Nayeem Geelani, who is a doctor in Islamabad — where he lives with his wife and two daughters — has had a heart ailment and is in hospital. The Geelani family approached the government for an extension of the passports to visit Nayeem.
