The Calcutta High Court has directed the state government to file an affidavit on cow slaughter in the state on the occasion of of Eid on November 7.
Advocate Parameswar Mishra moved a PIL filed by Rajesh Yadav on September 30,claiming that an order passed by the Supreme Court in 1995 on cow slaughter was not complied with in the state. Mishra pleaded that there should be a ban on slaughter of healthy cows in the state.
Opposing the petition,advocate Ashoke Banerjee argued that the Supreme Court had never banned cow slaughter. He said the petitioner had approached the high court 15 years after the apex court passed the order. The petitioner also had not shown any evidence of violation of order.
A division bench of Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Soumen Sen directed the state and the Imam of Tipu Sultan mosque to file an affidavit by October 24. The case will come up for hearing on November 1.
