HC discusses steps to save Sukhna Lake

Expressing serious concern over the decreasing level of Sukhna Lake, the Punjab and Haryana high Court today asked the Chandigarh Administration to ensure that desilting and the removal of shrubs is done periodically to save Sukhna Lake from drying up.

Meanwhile, the UT counsel today apprised the High Court that if the city receives normal rainfall for two years, the lake will be saved for the next two decades. The Bench was told that compared to the average rainfal of 1153 ml, the city this year has received only 853 ml of rain till now.

Amicus curiae in the case, Advocate Tanu Bedi, told the High Court that the floodgates have become very old (54 years old) and need to be replaced. She said that leakage from floodgates is taking place. The Bench also discussed in detail steps which can be taken for the protection of Sukhna Lake from drying.
