HC dismisses Siddiqui’s plea in assets case

The Allahabad High Court today dismissed a petition filed by former PWD minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui challenging the order of the Lokayukta asking Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to reconsider his recommendations in connection with a disproportionate assets case against the minister and his wife.

Earlier, the court had reserved the judgement on September 19.

Lokayukta N K Mehrotra had conducted an inquiry into the allegations of corruption against Siddiqui and his family members. The inquiry report, which indicted the minister and his wife, was sent to the then Chief Minister Mayawati for action. However, Mayawati rejected the report and refused to take action against Siddiqui, who was among the most powerful ministers in her regime.

But immediately after the Samajwadi Party government took over, Justice Mehrotra sent the report again for re-consideration of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on March 15.

The order was passed by a division bench of Acting Chief Justice Amitava Lala and Justice P K S Baghel.
