The Gujarat High Court continued with its tough stand against frivolous Public Interest Litigations (PILs),and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on an association of diamond workers of Bapunagar and the nearby areas of Ahmedabad on Tuesday for moving one without any public interest.
In a recent drive,the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had sealed the buildings of diamond traders for non-adherence of construction norms like use for commercial purpose without obtaining the mandatory Building Use permission.
The workers under the banner of Vivekanand Diamond Association moved a PIL demanding removal of the seals on the buildings citing loss of employment. The body is a conglomerate of association of workers of various diamond units in and around Bapunagar in east Ahmedabad.
A Division Bench of the HC comprising Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya and Justice K M Thaker said the petition is not public interest. Public is not interested in diamonds, Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya said while dismissing the PIL.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the petitioner association asking it to deposit the amount with the Ahmedabad chapter of Indian Red Cross Society. The court ordered to take action in accordance with law if the petitioner association did not deposit the money.
