HC nod for vehicle parking at Shivaji Park during Ganesh fest

The Bombay High Court on Monday permitted vehicular parking at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai for three days during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

A division bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Amjad Sayyed was hearing an application filed by the city police seeking permission for parking at Shivaji Park.

The application was filed as another bench of the High Court had declared Shivaji Park as silence zone and directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to not grant permission for any festival celebrations in the area.

"Parking of vehicles should be confined only for three days — September 23, 25 and the last day of the festival. The parking should be allowed only in the area earmarked by the state government," the court directed.

The civic body has been directed to restore the place within a week after the festival.

The municipal commissioner and police commissioner had last week faced the ire of the court for failing to comply with an order passed by it in October last year directing them to hold a meeting with members of the petitioner NGO to chalk out options to ensure that nuisance is not caused.

However, last week when the court was informed that no meeting was held, it pulled up both the commissioners for treating citizens as "untouchables".

Warning strict action against the commissioners, the court had given a last chance to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the police and directed them to hold a meeting on Saturday.

The court was informed that a meeting was held and several options were being implemented.
