Bombay High Court (HC) asked BMC Wednesday to reply to a PIL seeking a direction to ensure prompt anti-dengue measures in the city.

The petition by NGO Help Mumbai Foundation seeks "relief in public interest to ensure adequate preventive measures are taken by respondents (state government and BMC) to prevent the spread of dengue".

It cites BMC figures to say 725 dengue cases were reported in 2012. However, the PIL says, since the disease is not notifiable, it is not mandatory for private hospitals and clinics to report it.

The petition also demands the state government and BMC take steps to make dengue a notifiable disease and the civic body control sources of mosquito-breeding. The case will now be heard in January.
