HC seeks state’s view on banning polythene in districts along Ganga

The Allahabad High Court has sought the state government's response on the possibility of banning polythene in all the districts that are along Ganga, to help reduce pollution in the river.

The High Court had already banned sale, production and use of polythene in Allahabad on October 19.

Hearing a PIL demanding improvement of civic and sanitary conditions in Varanasi on Monday, a division bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and Arun Tandon asked the government counsel to seek instructions from the departments concerned and file a reply. The court said that the reply may be submitted in connection with another PIL dealing with pollution in Ganga. The same division bench is hearing the Ganga-related PIL, which will next come up for hearing on December 6.

The court passed the order after petitioner Kautilya Society of Varanasi, through its general secretary Vrinda Dar, submitted that polythene should be banned in all districts along Ganga river.
