HC slams panel probing Salunkhe case

A division bench of Bombay High Court (HC) criticised Monday a committee probing allegations of obtaining a fake degree against dismissed law professor Chitra Salunkhe.

Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode said the Govekar committee set up by Siddharth College management did not hear out Salunkhe before indicting her.

It reserved order on a petition filed by her challenging the dismissal.

Salunkhe was dismissed in 2009 after it was found that she had allegedly obtained a fake BA degree from Kakatia University in Andhra Pradesh.

On November 7, Avinash Khamkhedkar, lawyer for the management, told the court the college had tendered an unconditional apology for "harrassment" caused to Salunkhe and that it was willing to reinstate her.

However, on November 19, Prasad Dhakephalkar, counsel for the RPI-led faction of the management, said he did not support the statement made on instructions of M S More, chairman of the governing council of Peoples Education Society, which runs the college.

Another petition by Salunkhe alleging that K L Bishnoi, additional director general of police, cleared a law exam using fradulent means is pending before HC.
