The Gujarat High Court ordered an oral stay on the demolition of three commercial buildings in the city after their owners/occupants moved the court on Thursday.
Over 100 commercial establishments on C G Road are facing demolition following issuance of showcause notices for violation of building by-laws. After the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation began razing these structures on Wednesday, the traders pointed fingers at the town development officials.
The HC today passed an oral stay on the demolition of the three petitioner buildings —Shilp on C G Road, Patel Estate in Nikol, Nalanda Hotel in Mithakhali — till Monday when further hearing is slated. The order is applicable only to these buildings.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner U C Padia said the AMC is only implementing the HC directive of razing illegal structures. “We will do what the court orders on Monday,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gulabhai Kinger, Honorary Secretary, C G Road Shop Owners’ Association, said that today’s shutdown call received a good response. “The shop owners paid for their mistake of trusting the builders who presented different plans — one to the AMC and the other to the buyers. They showed the illegal structures as legal ones in connivance with corrupt officials in the town development office,” he said.
In a separate drive, the AMC south zone squads demolished 300 unauthorised houses belonging to illegal Bangladeshi migrants near Chandola Lake on Wednesday.
Padia said the houses were demolished in accordance with the list given by the Isanpur police.
