He made PAU a green abode

With a task to clean up the literal mess on the campus,he did his job in the right earnest. His predecessor had been shown the door for not delivering up to the mark,but he managed to impress PAU V-C Dr M S Kang. When asked about Dr Gurkirpal Singh’s work,sweeping his arm across the lush clean green lawns of the university,Dr Kang had once remarked,“It’s for all to see.”

“Even as Director Farms,I had to manage the huge farms of the university. There are no fixed timings and getting labour do the work is an uphill task. The only mantra is management,whether you manage them with love and an iron hand,the work has to be done,” says Dr Singh.

And this is just how Dr Singh has managed to spruce up the PAU campus where littered garbage was a major problem. “The staff is the same and so are the people,I just got them working,” beams Dr Singh while playing down his achievements.

Explaining his style of working,he says,“I have held the charge of the farms and know that if we postpone cleaning of farms for one day, garbage piles up and it become very difficult to change clean it up. For handling the garbage on the campus,I have tied up with the Department of Soil,College of Agriculture,which will install a machine to convert the garbage into compost. At present,we convert garbage in to compost by putting it in pits,but then the process takes at least six months while with machines the process is completed in a month.”

Dr Singh further added,“The landscape department has also been attached with the estate office and it makes it much easier for me to beautify the campus. Lack of co-ordination between various departments resulted in the mess,motivation works with everyone.”
