He planned to bomb Delhi: NIA

Based on Ansari’s interrogation,an NIA team carried out searches at his home in Beed’s Juna Bazar.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered a fresh FIR against Syed Zabiuddin Ansari for allegedly “trying to procure ammonium nitrate for Lashkar-e-Toiba to carry out blasts in Delhi and Mumbai”. The FIR links Ansari to ongoing operations of the Lashkar, and specifically to Fayyaz Kagazi,an accused in the May 2006 Aurangabad arms haul who is now believed to be a master bombmaker hiding out in Pakistan.

The FIR has been filed as part of NIA’s probe into the “larger conspiracy” allegedly hatched by Kagazi,of which the Aurangabad operation was a part. NIA investigators carried out raids at Beed near Aurangabad and Mulund in Mumbai over the weekend,in the course of which they were learnt to have seized documents, pen drives and CDs.

The FIR,learnt to be based on “source information” collected during Ansari’s interrogation, says “credible information has been received that Ansari and Kagazi are making efforts to collect explosive substance including ammonium nitrate in pursuance of larger conspiracy hatched by LeT”.

Charges under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act have been slapped on Ansari and Kagazi, sources said. Kagazi has been on the run since 2006.

Ansari is learnt to have told interrogators that Kagazi,a science graduate,is an expert at assembling IEDs — often using ammonium nitrate, the explosive used in the bombings in Mumbai,Delhi,Jaipur,Ahmedabad and UP,most of which were believed to have been carried out by the IM.
