Kenya terror attack: ‘He would have lived if he knew name of Prophet’s mother’

B N Sudarshan was among those killed in the Nairobi terror attack.

“He would have been alive if he knew the name of Prophet Mohammed’s mother. My friends in Kenya told me that the terrorists asked him this question and he was unable to answer. So they shot him in the head,” said Nagaraj Bettaiah,the business partner of B N Sudarshan who was identified as the third Indian killed in the Westgate mall attack in Nairobi.

Over the last 15 years,B N Sudarshan,50,an exporter of construction equipment and school textbooks from Bangalore,had made frequent business trips to Kenya,Ghana,Uganda,Ethiopia,Rwanda and Liberia. This time,he was scheduled to be in Nairobi for just a day.

On Saturday afternoon,a day after he left Bangalore,he called up his brother B N Ramaprasad from Nairobi. He told him that his work in Nairobi was done and he would just look around or rest,before catching a flight to Uganda.

“On Sunday evening,we tried to reach him on his cellphone but he did not respond. That was when we started to get worried because a full picture of the terror attack had emerged. We did not know which hotel he was staying in. My daughter in the US who has access to his email password tracked the hotel where he had booked a room,’’ said Ramaprasad.

When they called up the Nairobi hotel,they were told that Sudarshan had gone out on Saturday evening and not returned,but his luggage was still in the room. The family then got in touch with the Indian mission in Nairobi. On Monday night,they were informed that Sudarshan was among those killed in the attack.

His family and friends are now waiting for his body.

“We don’t know when he died. But we know that the terrorists shot him in the head,” said Bettaiah,who dropped him off at the airport on Friday morning. He said this was “one of his shortest business tours involving just six days of travel in Africa’’.

A bachelor,Sudarshan lived with his two brothers and a sister in a farmhouse at Hejjala village near Bidadi,about 25 km from Bangalore. While he used to earlier supply construction equipment to different regions in Africa,Sudarshan had diversified his business and supplied books,stationary and other items for school children.
