Headley talks of Abu Hamza, investigators probe if it’s Jundal

Sources say Ansari, also known as Abu Jundal, could be Abu Hamza, but no unanimity on this exists.

As investigators seek to confirm the various aliases of Zabiuddin Ansari, arrested in connection with the November 26,2008 terror attack in Mumbai, they are also trying to find out if he is Abu Hamza who appears frequently in the National Investigation Agency (NIA)’s interrogation report of Pakistani-American Lashkar operative David Headley.

Ansari,before he became Abu Jundal

Sources say Ansari, also known as Abu Jundal, could be Abu Hamza, although there is apparently no unanimity yet on either. The name Abu Jundal has been mentioned by Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during 26/11,as the Indian Lashkar operative in Pakistan who trained Kasab and his nine accomplices to speak Hindi.

“After the attacks,Sajid briefed Headley about the attacks and he (Sajid) told Headley that two of the crew of ‘Kuber’ were killed by him (Sajid). Headley believes that Sajid was speaking the truth as he never blows his trumpet unlike Muzzammil and Abu Hamza,” the interrogation report says.

“Sajid,Qanafa,Abu Hamza and one more person were on the other boat which escorted the main boat carrying the attackers. Abu Hamza was also involved in the planning and execution in the later stages as he is considered to be an ‘India expert’,” it adds.

Headley is also quoted as mentioning Hamza’s name in connection with the 2005 terror attack at the Indian Institue of Science in Bangalore in which Prof. M C Puri from IIT-Delhi was killed. “Abu Hamza, who participated in the Bangalore attack in 2005,is in Sajid’s group. Headley had seen him a number of times in Pakistan,” the report says.

Headley is alleged to have recollected that “there was a discussion on Prof Puri’s assassination in Bangalore by the LeT. Abu Hamza executed this action. Abdul Aziz had supervised this operation”.

Abu Hamza’s name was allegedly mentioned by Headley in connection with events linked to the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto as Headley claims to have been in Rawalpindi on the day of Bhutto’s killing.

“This safe house of LeT is located near the Ayub Colony in Rawalpindi. We had some serious discussions on attacking the Taj hotel. We also discussed Benazir’s assassination and its impact on the future of Pakistan. I recollect that all of them were praying that Benazir should not survive this attack. I met Abu Anas,Abu Hamza and Sajid in this Rawalpindi house,” Headley is quoted as saying.
