As Union Home Secretary G K Pillai confirmed that David Coleman Headley, arrested by the FBI for plotting a major terror attack in India at the behest of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, had visited the country, including Mumbai, several times, official sources said the government has now decided on prior clearances for visas to American citizens of Pakistani origin.

Sources said that Headley, a Pakistani national who acquired US citizenship after changing his name from Daood Gilani, travelled to India on business visas nine times between 2006 and 2009.

And Pillai, responding to queries from reporters today, said: “We do know that Headley had visited India a number of times. That is being investigated... He has been in Mumbai and some other places.”

Security agencies are looking into Headley’s visits to “several cities” and say it is too early to say whether these were linked to the 26/11 terror strike in Mumbai.

Official sources said Headley was suspected to have set-up an extensive network, particularly in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, using the cover of a businessman.

Although the government is awaiting the return of Intelligence officials who had gone to interrogate Headley and his associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana, alarm bells are already ringing in the internal security establishment with immigration records being dug out to get hold of the full picture.

As a first step, the government, sources said, will inform the Americans that visas to its nationals of Pakistani origin will only be given after prior clearances. The government believes that Daood Gilani deliberately acquired a Christian name and American passport to avoid detection in India.

Headley travelled to India nine times on business visaBy: Praful R Shah | 22-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I hate to point out that the problem is with Indian consulates and Indian selling themselves for a buck. One should see how pathetic service is provided by Indian Consulates overseas. The SIM card used by 26/11 terrorist was issued to a non existing Govt. employee. The Indian who trained terrorist could not be found. Do not blame all NRIs visiting India who have families are there. The Govt. agencies should do their job. Can someone answer whom to blame not providing bullets for AK-47 issued to them? How about using WWII war obsolete weapon used in 2008 and who is responsible? Everyone in India is price and majority is for sale.
INDIA UNDER MANMOHANBy: ANGRY INDIANS | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward THERE SHOULD BE CHECK ON ALL AMERICANS, INCLUDING NRIs APPLYING FOR VISAS AND NOT ONLY AMERICANS WITH PAK ORIGIN. THERE ARE SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES BEING CARRIED OUT IN INDIA BY THESE PEOPLE ONLY FACILITATED BY THIS MANMOHAN RAJ MAKING DEALS AFTER DEAL WITH THEM
WakeUpBy: PG | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Our intelligence community should start becoming more intelligent and comeout with multiple methods of analysis and detections to catch these guys. Also why limit to only to Pakis?
These are blood-thirsty peopleBy: Raj | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The religious fanatcs- A_Qaida, Let, RSS, Bajrang Dal, etc. are thirsty for the blood of ohers. Religious fanaticism should be banned in Pak and in India. They should be arrested like the US did. They should not be let go just because these groups belong to majority groups in PAk and India. Another caution- Muslims should not be allowed to change their names as they might act like an angel to kill people. Editor-please take note- "David Coleman Headley" is not a Christian name. David is a Jewish name. He was one of the kings of Israel.
