Dr Akash Rajpal, who has worked for over 13 years in public health and corporate healthcare and consultancy, has been selected for the Ramanujan-Bose prize. The award is designed to recognise innovative thinkers and their projects. The Ramanujan Bose Foundation identifies individuals who can help at least five lakh individuals over next few years and create a huge social impact. The prize consists of US$30,000 to attend a three month program at the NASA Ames Singularity University at San Francisco. Rajpal has also set up Ekohealth to help patients who do not get insured and set up a call centre that operates in Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.

Herbal Expo

Sanjivani-2012, the exhibition of herbal products and alternative therapies, will commence from June 7 at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch. Organised by Axion Events and Promotion, the exhibition is expected to showcase around 100 stalls with products and services coming from various states of India. The expo will feature daily free health check-ups, lectures, seminars and workshops on a variety of topics, informative display and education on medicinal plants and dry herbs, free gifts, discount offers and a lot more.

Miracle Recovery

Twenty-five-year-old Irranna Fakirappa, a resident of Kadaduddi, district Karnul, Andhra Pradesh, had sustained an injury to the spinal cord and a fracture in the spinal vertebra, which resulted in paralysis in both legs. Dr Sandeep Adke, orthopaedic, and Ilizarov specialist from Solapur, who also attends to an OPD clinic in Pune, operated on him with an advanced Russian Ilizarov technique by applying pins, rods and plates externally only on his fractured spine. This surgery lasted two hours. After the surgery, the patient regained partial sensation in his paralysed legs and was able to sit. Routinely, Ilizarov surgery is done on limbs, says Adke. "The surgery was performed for the first time on the spine without a big surgical incision." Adke has been trained in Ilizarov technique from Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center, Kurgan. He is the first fellow from this center. So far, he has successfully performed many difficult and complicated surgeries in India and abroad. He even operates on animals using this technique.
