Health matters: Lecture on cartilage tympanoplasty

Dr Mubarak Khan, Associate Prof in ENT and consultant at Sushrut ENT Hospital, Talegaon Dabhade, has been invited to deliver a lecture on his techniques of cartilage tympanoplasty at International Otology Workshop Wuzberg, Germany, on February 27. Khan is the only Indian among the faculty at the workshop and will discuss the technique for repair of tympanic membrane (ear drum) perforations. He uses tragal cartilage and then slices the cartilage, to increase the hearing. These techniques have been published in the journals Laryngoscope and American Journal of Otolaryngology.

Vegan recipes from Bollywood

Anuradha Sawhney, ex-chief functionary and head of Indian operations of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, has released a book, The Vegan Kitchen: Bollywood style. She has collated recipes from 50 Bollywood personalities such as Anupam Kher, Hema Malini, John Abraham and Sonam Kapoor. The book focuses on how a nutritious vegan diet can help reverse heart disease, manage diabetes and reduce obesity. Being a vegan is more of a lifestyle choice and a philosophy than a diet, she says. The book also has a collection of healthy vegetarian non-dairy recipes.

Conference on women's health

Physical, mental and emotional health of women is a must for a healthy family and in turn the entire community," said columnist Shobha De at the inauguration of the 3rd Women's Health Conference 2013, organized by Indian Medical Association at Westin. MP Rajni Patil, entrepreneur Dr Jayashree Fadnavis, IMA Pune President Dr Bharti Dhore Patil, secretaries Dr Mohan Joshi and Dr Prakash Marathe were present at the occasion. Four publications were also released at the conference that was held on February 16 and 17. It concluded with the screening of the film Women of the East, which will be released on International Women's Day and has been screened in several International Film Festivals.
