In the Police-Political Leadership Interface organised at Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Dr GS Aujla, former DGP, Punjab, called for a rotational basis for the appointment of DGP in the state. Calling it a highly politicized post in the state, he said there should be a system wherein every deserving candidate for the job reaches the rank.
Speaking about the political interference in the police department during his talk, Dr Aujla said that the positive and legitimate political intervention should be encouraged in the department while unnecessary and illegitimate political interference should not be shunned.
Later in the day, Manpreet Singh Badal, Finance Minister, Punjab, participated in the panel discussion on “Role of political leadership in police working.” He stressed upon the fact that in a welfare state, police were an important organisation which facilitated the development of the state though maintenance of law and order. In order to achieve this, a healthy coordination between police and political leadership was of paramount importance.
He laid emphasis on the fact that like other organizations, the police too now should see themselves as a service- oriented institution which would have credibility only if it served the people honestly and professionally. He commended the Police Academy for organising this interaction of people from diverse backgrounds for brainstorming to bring about a harmonious police-political relationship for achieving positive goals.
Earlier, the session was inaugurated by Dr GS Aujla, who in his key-note address, said the Punjab Police Academy was emerging as a catalyst to usher in better image of the police through proper training and such courses which broaden the horizon and perspective of the police and all others concerned.
