  • Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who is set to leave for Singapore in the second week of July for a kidney transplant, appeared nostalgic about his party’s relationship with the Congress. Speaking to the media outside Parliament last week, the SP general secretary recalled that he had got calls and messages from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel, and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee during his earlier visit to Singapore. “Congress leaders are good in such things,” he said, visibly touched. Regretting the split with the Congress, he said the SP should have either joined hands with the Left to bring down the UPA government on the nuclear deal issue, or stayed with the Congress and joined the government after elections. Ahmed Patel, who was passing by just then, came up to him to enquire about his health.
