Less than a week after cyclone Phyan battered the state, heavy rainfall lashed the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Sunday leading to water-logging in several parts.
Till 5.30 pm, 3 mm of rainfall was recoded in the city and by 8.30 pm, it had already reached 10.8 mm. According to the weather department officials, Pune can expect more rains in the next 24 to 48 hours.
The rainfall has come after a three-day reprieve when cyclone Phyan swept across Pune blowing at over 60 km per hour. Now, the city can expect rainfall largely because of a low-pressure development over Lakshadweep.
“There is also an interaction between the Westerlies and Easterlies which is causing rainfall. We are monitoring the low pressure over Lakshadweep to see if it becomes a depression in the next few hours. However, the city can expect localised widespread rainfall in many parts,” said Medha Khole, director, (weather), India Metereological Department.
This kind of monsoon activity may delay the onset of winter. Before Phyan, early winter onset had brought down temperatures to around 12 degrees, but it would take a few days of completely clear skies for temperatures to drop once again.
On Sunday, the minimum temperature was only around 20 degrees Celsius and the maximum around 30 degrees.
Meanwhile, the catchment areas of the dams supplying water to the city — Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar—¿ received close to 3 mm rainfall. Pavana dam received around 35 mm rainfall. But the storage in dams will not increase beyond the present 81 per cent level. Irrigation officials said that they were able to save on water storage because it is raining in downstream areas. As a result, dam officials are not releasing water for downstream areas.
