Commendable risk

Perhaps audience taste for comedy has changed. Or,maybe, the definition of comedy in Bengali cinema has changed. Jeet strips himself off his six-pack abs to take on the image of an actor who can make the audience laugh. As Megh Chatterjee, the US-returned head honcho of a big firm,he plays a handsome gentleman. He falls in love with the beautiful Mita (Priyanka Trivedi) who works in his office but the duo has never met in a professional capacity. She slams the door of her flat when he follows her. When he learns that she is looking for a servant to take care of her orphaned nephew Tinga (Aritro),he disguises himself as a servant. Tinga is a Bengali version of Dennis The Menace. He is so annoyingly precocious that you want throw him out of the film. Megh, who now calls himself Priyo, becomes his conniving friend.

Jeet as Priyo surrenders his romantic/action hero image to have buck teeth,a bad wig,a mole on one cheek, white tikka on his forehead and also wears dhoti kurta. He learns to speak Oriya too from his own servant. Mita remains unaware of his identity or about his true feelings for her. Jeet carries his Priyo persona as seamlessly and as funnily as he can. But frankly, comedy does not become him as has been proved earlier. The script fails him to some extent. The mistress-servant relationship keeps Mita from reciprocating his love. Yet,she does not question his pressing her feet when she is hurt.

As for cooking,Priyo hires the services of the ‘real’ Priyo (Kanchan Mullick) unknown to Mita and this funny guy does the needful to leave before she returns from work. Mullick offers some hilarious moments with his voice that is his brand identity and his funny persona that he carries with great grace. Priyanka as Mita has little to show except a flustered and confused look. Biswanath Bose is wasted in a weakly written role. Bratya Basu as Menon tries his best to infuse some fun in his dialogues but he cannot pull it off. Old-timer Lolita Chatterjee as Megh’s grandmother is artificial.

The cinematography remains flat for most of the film while the music is no great shakes except the item song in the ghetto.

Ratings: The two stars are for Jeet as Priyo and Kanchan Mullick as the real Priyo. Comedy is a tough nut to crack.
