  • Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, who is on a five-city US tour to popularise the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi, on Thursday urged the Indian American community here to lend their elping hand in developing the country.

Addressing a select gathering of eminent members of the community at the Indian Embassy here, the minister said their contribution could vary from building a small school in their village or sharing the knowledge back home.

The India Development Foundation for Overseas Indian, the US chapter of which is expected to be fully functional by next year, would provide a platform for the community to contribute towards their country, Ravi said.

The foundation was formed to facilitate NRIs in their philanthropic activities, including innovative projects and instruments, self help groups for economic empowerment of women, best practice interventions in primary education and technology interventions in rural health care delivery.

"The foundation will give opportunity to every overseas Indian to help in developing his or her village in every way," Ravi said, while urging the community to concentrate on three main issues education, health and women empowerment.

Global INK is being set up as an electronic platform for harnessing the knowledge and skills of the diaspora for the benefit of the country, Ravi said, adding the website is expected to be ready by the New Year.

"This is a knowledge bank," he said. The Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, who has so far visited Chicago, Denver and Houston, is now scheduled to visit New York later this week.

ridiculous!!By: megha | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It is really interesting to see how a bunch of people, elected to power can take the entire nation hostage. Although they are elected by the people only , to serve the people but may be it is the people's apathy to their inefficiency which is why they keep getting elected every time. If they do not get it, they let their sons /daughters do that. Baap ka maal hai, khao ,piyo aiesh karo!! on hard-working tax-payer's money.Wow!!
Just Lip Service will not help in bringing back the huge talentBy: Paul Deepak | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The Govt must create the right opportunities for the return of the huge talent back to India. The change has to occur right within the Govt Recruitment policies to various departments. The Govt depts must be manned by professionals with Customer service as the main motto. This attitude will bring a sea of change to the under privileged and also ensure that all are treated equally, except for some Mayawatis, Jayas. Bring back the scientific, research and management talent and let them shape the future of India. First of all make the law more stringent and enforce the strictest punishments for both minor and mojor affendors. Unless the judiciary is strengthened and the Policing force modernized, offence of all types will ruin India's progress and its people will still remain as one of the least disciplned in the world.
NRI's have better things to doBy: Adi | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr Ravi, we NRI's have better things to do in life. The reason we became NRI is due to politicians like you. You guys keep playing the card of divide and rule based on religion, caste and region. And the weak and calm citizens become the victim at the end. To escape all these we went out of the country. now, you want us to help you. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!
WHAT VYALAR RAVI, THE MINISTER IS SAYING..By: CV KUMAR | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward WHAT VAYALAR RAVI, IS SAYING TO INDIAN AMERICANS IS, THAT "MADHU KODA DEVELOPED ONLY JHARKHAND" THERE AS HE IS EAGER/DYING TO DEVELOP WHOLE INDIA.
V RaviBy: dilip mahanty | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward NRIs hesitate to dinate to Government run projects because they know that Ministers & their mandarins will dip their paws and spirit away most of the funds leaving practically nothing for the poor people. If the foundation is an autonomous body to be governed by ethical and genuinely concerned people with no interference from Government, then it may work and the money could filter through to the lowest denomination- the very purpose of remitting. With billions of dollars salted away overseas by corrupt politicians and bureaucrats with no sincere effort by the Government to recover these, there is "trust deficit" as far as politicians go. Ravi is no exception!
