In his latest collection of ten short stories titled Aey Mao,Behno,Betiyo, renowned Urdu writer Kashmiri Lal Zakir takes up the issue of women’s empowerment. Realist in mode,Zakir has chosen to write about the struggles of women he has personally known. “The issues concerning women are universal. I have travelled all over the world. In most places, women are not considered equal,” says Zakir, the chairperson of the Haryana Urdu Akademi. “Newspapers and magazines highlight the rich and powerful women of the country. No one talks about the problems of the common woman. So,I decided to choose ten women from all over the region and the city and write about them,” he adds.
