The cutoff for the third merit list announced on Monday has put some college authorities in a spot. While the cutoff percentage drops with every merit list, the third merit list given to Jai Hind College and KC college by the Maharashtra Knowledge Commission Ltd (MKCL) and the education department showed a rise in the marks.
For arts, the cutoff for the second merit list was 78% but in the third list, it was shown as 84.2%. For commerce the cutoff in the second list was 85% whereas it was shown as 87.69% in the third list. For science, however, the cutoff has dropped. Kirti Narain, principal of Jai Hind College, said, “There is confusion on the third merit list.” According to her, no student had taken admission to her college on Monday.
“We still have 51 seats in commerce, 25 in arts and 25 in science. Every year soon after the publication of second merit list, almost all the seats get filled. However, this year there is something amiss.” Surprisingly, even in the vocational science stream, which usually get filled up after the publication of second merit list, there are some seats vacant — in computer science, there are six seats and electronics there are seven seats.
In KC College, the commerce cutoff has increased, said Principal Manju Nichani. She said she was ‘surprised’ after getting the third cutoff list.
An official in the education department said the complaints would be looked into. “This is not possible. They may be cutoffs for different categories.”
