Highway traffic hit as LPG tanker overturns

The traffic on the old Pune-Mumbai highway moved at a snail's pace for more than seven hours after a tanker carrying more than 15 tonnes of LPG overturned and blocked one of the lanes near Kamshet pass in the early hours of Sunday.

The Kamshet police said the incident took place around 6.30 am when a speeding LPG tanker of a public sector petroleum company was on its way to Mumbai and the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp turn after crossing Kamshet pass.

Assistant Sub-Inspector V A Shaikh said: "Initially we feared leakage. We stopped traffic from both sides. But when fire brigade officials and company officials confirmed that there was no leakage, we allowed traffic flow from one side. The tanker had blocked the entire Pune-Mumbai lane."

The driver of the tanker has sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Shaikh added: "We removed the tanker around 1 pm. Till then, the traffic was moving but at a very slow pace."
