Voluntary organisations and peoples movements over the issue of environment degradation across the state have decided to hold a parallel Environment Day celebration in Kinnaur district this year. They will organise an environment march and rally at Reckong Peo on June 5.
In the last five to six years,Kinnaur district has been a hotbed for hydro power projects and peoples movements against the environment degradation as an outcome of such projects. Nearly 20 hydel projects are being constructed or are coming up along the Sutlej river basin and Baspa river in the district.
The theme of the national-level environmental rally will be Save Himalayan environment from the bulldozer of so-called development, said Guman Singh, convenor of the Himalaya Neeti Abhiyaan (HNA). The HNA is an umbrella NGO for all peoples movement for environment protection.
Of the 250-kilometre stretch of Sutlej flowing in the state,150 km is in Kinnaur,on which over 20 hydro projects will come up in future. The process can have a massive impact on the climate and vegetation, believe experts,as the river will not flow through its natural course but in tunnels.
Singh said issues such as dangers to environment conservation, livelihood, protection of forest and forest rights and displacement of people would be highlighted at the function on June 5. From Kinnaur district alone, over 3,000 people are likely to attend the event, said R S Negi of Him Lok Jagriti Manch. He said noted activists at the national level had also agreed to lend a voice to the cause.
