Bollywood actor Aamir Khan came in for special praise from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for his acting pursuits and also his involvement with education campaigns.

"It is a great delight to be here with Aamir Khan, who is not only a Bollywood icon but also the great advocate for education," Clinton said during a special interactive session with the students of Xavier College in Mumbai in which Khan was also present.

"I am here to see how US and India can work for the common cause of education, which is the great equaliser and gateway to opportunities," Clinton said.

Khan, the brand ambassador of an education campaign, who brought fore the need of special care to the differently-abled students with his award-winning film on autism "Taare Zameen Par", said children should be encouraged to be creative in their life and there should be less emphasis on memorisation.

"We have to tell our kids to be more caring and I think that is going to make a huge difference from 25 years onwards."

Supporting Khan's view, Clinton said, "I think the actual requirement to become successful in the world is cooperation and collaboration among people and among countries."

We ought to be proud of Aamir!By: Amrita | 23-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Aamir may not be an educationist. But he is involved in various campaigns promoting education. He himself, takes time to teach underprivileged children every year, under the Teach India program. It is only due to his involvement that Teach India became the largest literacy program in the world, with over 60,000 registered volunteers. He has not charged even a single penny for being the ambassador of Teach India and Teach For India. He has been dedicating 1 day each month, for the last 1 year, travelling to institutions like IITs, IIMs and encouraging students to volunteer their time for teaching underprivileged children. Besides, he has also been involved with the NGO Pratham, which works to provide primary education to poor children. So he does not only make movies with a message, but has also been actually involved in teaching, that too, long before TZP was made! Please give him credit for his earnest contribution, rather than mocking his participation. We ought to support good initiatives, rather than laugh at them.
Aamir, the educationist, how cute!By: Shobha Deodhar | 19-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I was thinking making films with a sandesh about any topic was one thing and being actually involved hands-on in it altogether another. But I am so wrong ! Now, very soon these filmy guys will be adventurists, mountaineers, olympic champions (I almost wrote chameleons), scientists, explorers - the list is endless. What should the real educationists, teachers, professors do now? Queue up outside the film studios? Humbug also has limits.

Amir Khan By: Khushminder Sahasi | 19-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Conratulations to Amir Khan for his efforts to focus on the problem of education for disadvantaged children. With entertainment we do need a message. Let us produce more quality films like Lagan, Taare Zamin Par, Mangal Pande et al. I would urge Amir to set a bar for conduct, acting, production keeping social values in view. Thanks to Mrs Hillary Clinton for recognizing Amir's talent and endeavours in this direction.Col Sahasi
