Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has granted environmental clearance under Forest Conservation Act 1980 for setting up 130 MW integrated Kashang stage II & III Hydro electric project in Lipa village of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh. The project will cost Rs 488 crores.
Executed by Himachal Power Corporationa state government undertakingthe project earlier has run into trouble after local villagers have filed a petition in the high court alleging violation of environmental norms by Hindustan Construction Company Ltd ,which has been given the civil works packages.
Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal informed that the Ministry of Environment and Forest has given nod for diversion of 17.6857 hactare forest land for construction of the project.
He said project will be completed in four-year period with 90 per cent dependable energy and will have catchment area of around 400 sq kilometres.
The chief minister said the commissioning date for stage-I has been fixed at January 2013,while the second and third stage will be commissioned by March 2015.
The company will construct a 7-km long underground tunnel to link the water of Kerang khad,having a design discharge of 18 cubic metre with already constructed Kashang tunnel for augumentation of water level.
