  • A senior Himachal Pradesh Police officer shot himself at his residence early Sunday. Inspector General of Police (Railway and Traffic) Jagjit Kumar Gupta, 57, was found lying in a pool of blood at his house, Shimla Superintendent of Police R M Sharma said. He had a bullet injury in his head.

“The post mortem report has confirmed suicide. The bullet injury was caused by a single bullet fired from a 9 mm pistol, which was his service weapon. His service revolver was found next to his body,” Sharma said.

A 1985 batch IPS officer, Gupta shot himself between 1.30 am and 2 am. His son and daughter heard the gunshot and rushed down from the first storey of their house, only to see Gupta lying in a pool of blood, Sharma said.

Gupta's family has alleged that he was being harassed by his seniors, which forced him to commit suicide. Gupta will be cremated in Shimla on Monday, his relatives said.
