Bihar Police jawan Bhagwan Singh is so proud of his son that he has no qualms in saluting him. His son Sujeet Kumar Singh is ranked 132 in the Civil Services examination and has fulfilled his father’s dream of entering the prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS).
“I am ready to salute my son if I am posted under him. It will make me prouder,” said Havildar Bhagwan Singh, at present posted with the Bihar Military Police (BMP) in Patna. “Since my father was in the police he always used to dream about seeing me as an IPS officer. I am happy that at last I have fulfilled his dream,” said Sujeet talking to The Indian Express over phone from New Delhi. He will reach Patna in the evening on Wednesday to meet his parents.
This is no ordinary success story, for Sujeet hails from a village where it is hard to find people who study after matriculation. Sujeet is the first graduate from his family, which is full of police and army personnel.
He matriculated from his uncle’s town, Maner, before going to Delhi's Hindu College for graduation. Last time, he had missed the civil services by a whisker. “My village is very backward. Given a chance I would like to do something for my village,” he said. His native village Nad falls in the Naxalite-affected Shivsagar block and lacks proper roads and electricity.
Meanwhile, Abhisek, a chemical engineer from IIT, has cleared the civil services in his third attempt. The Patna boy has secured 42nd rank.
