An ailing and penniless Amar Kant was planning to sell his awards and mementos for buying food and medicines. His books are taught in several universities and schools in Russia, Japan and India. He is a recipient of the Soviet Land Nehru Award.

Uttar Pradesh had honoured Amar Kant for his invaluable contributions to Hindi literature and conferred Mahatma Gandhi award, Sahitya Bhusan Award and Sahitya Academy Award on him.

Talking to The Indian Express, Bharatiya Jnanpeeth director and famous writer Ravindra Kalia said he found it surprising that the UP Government was neglecting Amar Kant while the MP Government had offered help.

His contemporary, Doodhnath, and noted lawyer Ravi Kiran Jain said they hoped the governments at the state and Centre would also come forward with help for the ailing writer, given the fact that he requires expensive medical treatment.

No Hope for IndiaBy: Parikshit | 12-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward wow if a noted litterateur can face such a treatment from the govt, what should we the small people expect? And then we blame brain drain. We outside India are sick people who keep wishing to return to our homeland to make it a better place. I dont see that happening. how can I have hope when police let a man kill a kid and then let him escape, when a goon challenges the top cop of mumbai to come to the streets, and the govt is biased based on race and caste. No sir I dont have any hopes from this country. I dont see a better India in my lifetime at least.
callous state govts......By: indian | 12-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward The UP Govt will come to the rescue of people only on the basis of their caste orientation. It has money to squander on Mayawati's statues but not on education, roads, maintainence of law and order or even for monetary help to eminent Hindi litterateurs............Such states have to be further divided into smaller administrative units for better governance.Their big size creates all sorts of vested interests and encourages corruption. It is this that leads to millions of their hapless citizens to migrate to other states for sustenance.
