PM Manmohan Singh has asked Syed Sibtey Razi to relinquish office on health grounds.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked Assam Governor Syed Sibtey Razi, who was earlier Jharkhand Governor, to demit office and save the UPA government the embarrassment after CBI raids are said to have affirmed reports of alleged corruption in the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan under Razi’s watch.

“At a meeting on August 11, the PM asked Razi to relinquish office on health grounds but Razi insisted on time until October when his five-year term comes to an end. He also told the PM that he needed time to explain his position to party president Sonia Gandhi,” a senior official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

However, the PM insisted — at the five-minute meeting — that the former Jharkhand Governor put in his papers and then approach the party high command for rehabilitation, the official added. Later that night, Razi met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to reiterate his stand.

They said Razi — who was sworn in as Assam Governor on July 27 — had also sought time from Home Minister P Chidambaram on August 7 to give his side of the story even though the request is ostensibly to discuss corruption in North East Council, the nodal agency for economic and social development in the North-eastern states. He has been given time tomorrow evening, sources added.

However, Razi’s request for a meeting with Sonia Gandhi has not come through, they said.

The UPA government shunted Razi from Jharkhand to Assam on July 18 after then IB’s Ranchi station-in-charge Janardan Singh confirmed an ex-MLA’s complaint to the PMO of alleged corruption involving the Governor and his staff.

Political CorruptionBy: Kalpathy Venkataraman | 20-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Corruption at high places is really sapping the the strength of Indian democracy and if left unchecked, India doesn't need China or Pakistan to destabilize it. I am very sorry to note that CVC which is supposed to prosecute these scoundrels is a mere puppet in the hands of these crooks. Since the political bosses are corrupt, their departments become corrupt and thus corruption has pervaded all parts of Indian society like malignant cancer. If the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh is really serious about tackling this problem, then the Parliament should introduce capital punishment for political corruption. Political corruption is as bad as espionage or treason and we can trace all the uprising in different states in India to political corruption. The CVC
Step down MAHAMAHIMBy: NC Joshi | 19-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward mahamahim or His Excellency are the words, by which the Governors are normally being addressed. This is an high office, representing The President of India. This high office was never a part of such controversies as we dont think of involvement of such high dignitories.Though this is not the first time when news about the corruption by the Head of any State have come up during Presidents rule but it would have been better to resign immediatly to save the honour and dignity of the high office of the Governor. There were instances when the Governors had behaved like Chief ministers during the Presidential rule in their respective states as many of such appointments were of political nature and such people must had a feeling of working like CMs even for time being under President rules. In many cases, the IAS/IPS officers were shunted during that period like any political changes in the statemwhich should have been done only in extreme odd administrative situation. He must quit now.
Razi ke raj ka raazBy: Kishore Karnad | 18-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Your readers are acting as if Razi is the first corrupt guy at high place to be in trouble for his deeds. He is just one more member of the thieves' kitchen- have we already forgotten Buta-Sweety combiune? And look at his audacity... despite the P.M.'s suggestion, he wants to meet sonia, the Czarina, almost sure that he will escape. And escape he will, alongwith his parteners. Havn't all others before him? And to his advantage he is from the 'minority' and will not fail to encash his trump card--like many others before him. And even if he is sacked, someone, equally corrupt will take over, loot the country further. Can one expect anything else in world's most corrupt country ruled by one family for most of the last 62 years? No, unless the dynastic rule changes---if at all!
Corruption chargesBy: Tonomoy | 18-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Minority or not since these corruption charges have already been slapped...can the Governor step down please if he has any moral valuse until the court prosecutes or clears him of these charges.
Corruption and nepotism is part and parcel of Congress cultureBy: asha | 18-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Corruption and nepotism is part and parcel of Congress culture. Most people in Congress work to keep the Gandhi family happy and loot the taxpayers to keep their family and themselves happy.
