A Hisar-based shopkeeper was convicted of theft charges on Friday. The court awarded him 1-year rigorous imprisonment for stealing electricity, and directed him to pay Rs 2.25 lakh to Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN), failing which he will undergo rigorous imprisonment for another six months.
In 2009, when a team of DHBVN officials raided the shop of Mohinder Singh, resident of Kaimri Road, Hisar, Mohinder was found stealing electricity from the main line and was also supplying it to two of his tenants. The DHBVN moved the court and filed a case against Mohinder under the Electricity Act, 2003 and Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2007. Hisar Additional Sessions Judge Y S Rathore heard both the sides and held Mohinder guilty of stealing electricity.
