History book error: Board of study gets notice, may be dissolved

THE state government has asked the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) to take strict action against those responsible for erroneous maps in Class 10 textbooks of history as well as geography and economics.

THE state government has asked the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) to take strict action against those responsible for erroneous maps in Class 10 textbooks of history as well as geography and economics.

“We had asked for an explanation from the members of the board of study of history. They have admitted to the mistake. We will formally issue them a showcause notice. Those responsible for the error can also be suspended or dismissed,” said Sarjerao Jadhav, chairman of MSBSHSE.

In the history textbook,no markings have been made on the blue stretch, which comprises the Arabian Sea,Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal,to indicate Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar islands.

According to procedures,a showcause notice is first issued and if found guilty, the board of study can be dissolved.

The error was noticed after state board issued a statement last week, admitting to grammatical mistakes in the Class 10 history and civics textbook and to the use of an erroneous map in its geography textbook.

The geography textbook had omitted a substantial part of Arunachal Pradesh from the map of India and has shown it as a part of neighbouring China.

“We have set an example by sending notices to members of the boards of study of geography and economics and dissolving them,” said Jadhav.

For the current edition books, the board can either take back the ones sold and return the corrected version after rectifying the error or may instruct schools to tell students to correct the mistake.
