Hit during chase, police vehicle overturns, two constables injured

Two on-duty policemen were seriously injured after their vehicle was hit by the car they were chasing. The incident was reported from Outer Delhi's Kanjhawala area, near Sir Chhotu Ram Polytechnic Institute on Sunday morning.

The policemen were patrolling the area when they noticed a speeding Hyundai Accent. According to police, the car was being driven at 100 km/h and was not observing lane discipline.

"When the policemen noticed the car, they asked the driver to stop. Instead of slowing down, the car accelerated and overtook the PCR van. Since it did not stop, the policemen got suspicious and started chasing the vehicle," a senior officer said.

During the chase, the PCR van managed to pull up next to the Accent, when its driver rammed the police vehicle. The PCR van lost control and hit the central verge of the road.

While the vehicle overturned after the Accent rammed it, two other PCR vehicles joined the chase. Policemen fired two rounds at the Accent and tried to stop the assailants but they managed to flee.

The two PCR vans returned and took the two injured policemen to the hospital, police said.

The accused driver fled the spot. A PCR call was made by a passerby.

Those injured were identified as Head Constables Udaybhan (47) and Satbeer (58). They were admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital and were said to be out of danger.

Policemen noted down the registration number of the Accent and the hunt is on for the accused.

The police will also approach the Transport department and contact the owner of the car.

The police suspects that the accused had stolen the car and were trying to flee. A case has been registered at Kanjhawala police station, police said.
