A HIV positive man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court for throttling his wife a year ago.

Additional district and session judge Bijayaketan Mohanty pronounced the sentence on Wednesday.

On August 24,2008,Sambhu Prasad killed his wife before attempting suicide after the villagers came to know about his HIV-positive status,police said Prasad,a resident of Tusura,about 38 km from here,had not disclosed to anyone about his disease. The villagers came to know of it when an official told him publicly to go to the block office to collect Rs 200 under Madhubabu pension plan,a scheme for HIV-positive people.

After his failed suicide attempt,Prased returned home and told his mother-in-law that he had killed his wife. On her complaint,police arrested Sambhu and charged him of murder.
