  • Senior BJP leader L K Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had earlier spoken to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Central Government functionaries to clear the Bill. Modi has repeatedly told the Centre that his state required the law to counter anti-national elements active in the area. He has also told the Centre that apart from the fact that the law was passed by the state legislature on the directions of the Centre, the GUJCOC Bill is a carbon copy of the MCOCA, which is in force since 1999.
