Honour killing: Granthi strangles wife

Ashok Singh, granthi (priest) of the local gurdwara in Dehlon village, strangulated his wife on Friday, suspecting her to be “having affairs with other men”,police said on Sunday.

Ashok Singh, granthi (priest) of the local gurdwara in Dehlon village, strangulated his wife on Friday, suspecting her to be “having affairs with other men”,police said on Sunday.

After killing Simrajeet Kaur (30),Ashok walked out of the house with their 10-year-old son, taking him to school as usual, the police said.

Dehlon SHO Satinderpal Singh said: “The residence of the couple is located within the gurdwara compound. When devotees reached the gurdwara for morning prayers, they found Simrajeet dead. The village sarpanch was told about it and he informed us.”

“At first,no one suspected Ashok Singh as he was not at home when the police came. However, his neighbours told us that the granthi used to beat Simarjeet regularly, adding that she had gone to her parents and returned recently. This was second marriage for both Simarjeet and Ashok, who were previously divorced. The two had been married for four months only,of which Simarjeet had spent three months at her parents’ place. The 10-year-old boy is from Simarjeet’s first husband,” added Singh.

After the postmortem report confirmed that Simarjeet had been strangulated, the police said, they started questioning Ashok who later confessed to killing her. “Ashok said Simarjeet had relations with other men. To save the honour of his family, his community and his village,he killed her,” the SHO said.

He,however, added that Simarjeet’s parents had alleged that Ashok had been harassing her for dowry.

The accused has been booked under Section 304 of the IPC.
