The Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has arrested Rakesh Giri (31),the nephew of Vadodara-based Subhash Giri, for his alleged involvement in the Ahmedabad hooch tragedy case.
With this, the total number of people arrested in connection to the case has become 27. All the accused have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, for administering stupefying substance intentionally and on charges of criminal conspiracy, said a DCB official.
A resident of Karodiya on the outskirts of Vadodara,Rakesh, said the DCB,used to deal in pilfered chemicals and had met Jayesh Thakkar through his uncle.
On being asked by a Vadodara-based bootlegger,Sunil More,Rakesh had introduced Vinod Chauhan alias Dagri to Giri and the latter made him meet Thakkar, who is accused of supplying 1,200 litres of Methanol to Chauhan. This methanol was later used to manufacture the killer brew. The DCB added that Rakesh was earlier caught on charges of loot, assault and chemical thefts.
Meanwhile, two days after his arrest,Giri suffered a heart attack in police custody on Thursday. Giri (52) was rushed to V S Hospital and is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
According to the DCB,during his interrogation,Giri reportedly complained of severe pain in the chest around 3 pm and was rushed to the hospital. His condition is said to be out of danger.
The uncle-nephew duo, said DCB,are accused of brokering methanol deal between Thakkar and the kingpin of the spurious hooch racket,Chauhan.
