Hospital staff protest poor working conditions, pending dues

Medical and paramedical staff at MGM hospital in Parel on Wednesday staged a ‘Gandhian’ protest over non-payment of salaries and pathetic working conditions.

Medical and paramedical staff at MGM hospital in Parel on Wednesday staged a ‘Gandhian’ protest over non-payment of salaries and pathetic working conditions. This is the fourth such protest by the hospital staff over the past one year.

“We have not been paid our salaries for several months even though we work double shifts to make up for staff shortage. The working conditions at the hospital are terrible. The nurses’ and doctors’ quarters are in a shambles,” said a junior doctor.

Doctors said the construction work of a medical college on the hospital premises, which has been on for a long time, has affected patients’ health. The work for the college, which will comprise nine buildings,is expected to go on for the next three to five years.

The protest was called off after the medical superintendent of the hospital assured the staff that they would receive their salaries in the next couple of days and their other demands would also be addressed.

“The demands are justified. Working conditions in the hospital are very difficult as we are understaffed. Grants have also not been provided to the hospital for repair work to be carried out,” said medical superintendent Dr Nimesh Shah. “The protest was peaceful and patient care was not affected,” Shah said.
