Since it was one of the more meaningful soirees of the season, we made sure to red-circle Sunday for the Diamond Jubilee of the iconic Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. True to its cultural innings, the evening was a mix of some of the finest names from the world of art hobnobbing with old Bombay hands.
Interestingly, a Kolkata designer was chosen to present a fashion showcase. But it probably was Sabyasachi's vibe of a suffering artist, or the intellectual energy of his superb clothes (models still bespectacled), that got him the job. That, and the fact that his muse — the beauteous Vidya Balan — is so easy on the eye.
After cocktails at the terrace of the Jehangir, guests were led through a red-carpeted and candle-lit garden path to the main lawn of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum, formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum. A large ramp was set where models presented the full-sleeved, lace-laden collection under hot arc-lights in the sultriest month of the year, against Shubha Mudgal's amazing vocals. Legends such as Krishen Khanna, Jogen Chowdhury, Thota Vaikuntam and Prafulla Dahanukar were presented a shawl onstage by Balan, Harsh Goenka and Sangita Jindal, but the oversight of a wheelchair runway didn't allow a glimpse of Akbar Padamsee or Suhas Roy.
