A portion of an apparently well-maintained building collapsed on Thursday leaving one person dead and three severely injured.
At 9 am, the landing of the staircase of the building located at 7B, Bondel Road caved in and the family of the caretaker of the house got buried under the debris.
The four victims — Debraj Bose (60), Rupam Bose (7), Arpita (16) and Sikha Bose (55) — were rescued by the locals and rushed to Sishu Mangal hospital.
After a check-up, however, the hospital authorities sent Debraj and Rupam to the SSKM hospital as they had suffered serious head injuries. Debraj succumbed in the afternoon.
According to the hospital authorities, Rupam needs to be operated on urgently. “We have visited the spot and went to the hospital to see the victims. Rupam is battling for life. Doctors said he is in a serious condition,” said local councillor (ward 65) Sushil Sharma.
“The condition of Arpita and Sikha is also critical. They are now under observation,” said Sharma. He added that a demolition team of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been sent to the spot and they have cleared the debris.
The house is owned by Amiya Dhar (90). No FIR has been filed in this regard yet, said Sharma.
“We have gone to the spot to examine the condition of the house. Apparently, the house is in a good condition. We suspect that there was some structural defect in that part of the house,” said an official of the KMC’s building department.
