House slams Israel strike on Lebanon

  • The Members of the Lok Sabha, across political lines, in a rare show of solidarity, passed an unanimous resolution expressing ‘‘deep concern’’ over the ‘‘largescale and indiscriminate’’ Israeli bombing of Lebanon that killed civilians, including children.

Unlike the Iraq resolution the text of which had taken days to be formulated in a manner acceptable to all, today’s resolution condemning the bombing in Lebanon was literally drawn within minutes of the all-party meeting called at 4 pm.

Following the meeting, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee read it out in the Lower House interrupting the day-long acrimonious debate on the office of profit Bill.

‘‘Deeply concerned over escalation of this conflict which affects India’s security and other vital interests, this House calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire so that further destruction of Lebanon is prevented,’’ Chatterjee said, reading out the resolution reflecting what he said was ‘‘mood of the House’’.

The Lok Sabha in the resolution expressed ‘‘its deepest condolences, sympathy and support of the People of India to the people of Lebanon in this difficult time.’’

With the government not posing an obstacle in the way of a strongly worded resolution and the main opposition BJP and the Left readily agreeing to the text, it was a ‘‘smooth sailing five-minute affair’’, MPs who attended the meeting said.

The largescale and indiscriminate Israeli bombing of Lebanon that has been underway for many days has resulted in killing and suffering of a large number of innocent civilians, including women and children, and caused widespread damage to civilian infrastructure in Lebanon, the resolution said.
