  • Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd (MIAL) has requested the state government to grant a Floor Space Index (FSI) of 4 — the proposed FSI for housing police personnel which is under consideration— to meet the housing needs of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guarding the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

In a letter to state urban development department, R K Jain, president for business development at MIAL, the private operator for the airport, has asked the government to allow a higher vertical limit for residential quarters of CISF personnel.

About 2,000 CISF personnel are deployed at the airport.

MIAL officials said they plan to increase the CISF strength at the airport to meet the requirement of 3,500 personnel in various categories. “Housing facilities for the CISF are inadequate. It is the responsibility of the airport to provide them with proper accommodation. MIAL has already taken steps to construct barracks on airport land. There is a need of additional land for quarters for family accommodation,” said a MIAL spokesperson.

He added that the demand for an FSI of 4 stems from the state government move to allow it for police housing. “MIAL has made a request to allow an FSI of 4 for CISF residential quarters as it is also a central government security force. Our request is only for optimal utilisation of land for providing housing for CISF personnel,” the spokesperson said.

State officials said that in a recent meeting, MIAL officials stated that an FSI of 4 would generate 12 lakh sq ft required to house about 1,200 to 1,500 personnel.
