A three-member team from the motor vehicles department on Monday inspected the minibus that had skidded off Bankim Setu in Howrah crashing onto the railway tracks last Saturday. The team examined if there was a mechanical glitch in the vehicle that led to the accident. The report will be submitted to the police soon.
“The team inspected the bus. We are expecting a forensic team to visit the site on Tuesday,” said Ashim Roy, Inspector-in-Charge, Howrah police station.
Forty-eight hours after the accident, three of the injured admitted to the Howrah Zilla Hospital are still in intensive care and the condition of Shibu Chowdhury (20) is critical. The accident had left 10 people dead on the spot on Saturday and two more succumbed to their injuries on Sunday.
Chowdhury was returning after seeing the girl whom he intended to marry. Having lost his brother-in-law and his sister admitted to another railway hospital, he is fighting for his life with multiple chest injuries and damaged lungs. Relatives of other two patients said they feared the worst.
G Mukherjee, a friend of shopkeeper Nokuleshwar Pandit (63) who is also in ITU, said: “There is a shortage of doctors, especially specialists in ITU. There is only one physician. Even facilities like scanning machine are not available.”
