Irregularities surfacing in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Uttar Pradesh seems to have come as a wake up call for Himachal Pradesh.

Irregularities surfacing in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Uttar Pradesh seems to have come as a wake up call for Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, who presided over a meeting of NRHM on Thursday, directed the health officials to ensure that the services provided under the NRHM are “best” in the country and no laxity is allowed.

“Doctors who do not perform their duties earnestly or are found absent should be dealt with sternly. Those setting an example of dedicated service shall be rewarded. The state government is spending Rs 862 crore on the health sector,” said Dhumal.

In the past two years,814 doctors and 883 nurses have been appointed to meet the shortage of the doctors in the far-flung areas of the state.

He added that more than 80 per cent free institutional deliveries have been performed in government health institutions. The figure was 52 per cent till three years ago.

The free ambulance seva — Atal Sawathya Seva Yojana — has helped shift 47,822 patients to hospitals. As many as 272 deliveries have taken place in ambulances, which are equipped with necessary emergency features, said the chief minister.
