Huma Abedin sucked into Weiner scandal

Huma Abedin, an aide to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has been sucked into the scandal involving her husband New York congressman Anthony Weiner, who had admitted to having sexually explicit online conversations with at least six women.

35-year-old Abedin's father was an Islamic scholar of Indian-descent while her mother, a sociologist, was originally from Pakistan.She was born in Michigan and spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia before returning for college to the US.

Parallels are being drawn between Abedin and her boss Clinton, who also had to deal with her husband's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Abedin currently serves as deputy chief of staff to Clinton.

The New York Times reported, last week, Abedin was in the early stages of pregnancy. They have been married for less than a year.

"She was very unhappy, she was very disappointed, and she told me as much. And she also told me that she loved me and we're going to get through this," Weiner said about the present status of the marriage in a news conference, according to the 'USA Today'.

46-year-old Weiner has said the couple will not split up but Abedin has kept quiet on the matter so far. The politician had tweeted a salacious photograph of himself on twitter to a woman in Seattle.

Despite calls for his resignation, the politician has refused and instead checked himself into rehab for treatment.

As a White House intern in 1996, Abedin was assigned to the first lady's office and has reportedly been close to Clinton since then.

Many pundits in the US have speculated like her boss, Abedin will not detach herself from her cheating husband, to advance her political career. Others have said that Abedin should not be pulled into her husband's mess.

The Weiner affair has grabbed the media spotlight in the US displacing the scandal of Dominique-Strauss Kahn for the time being.
