  • The statement of the Met department that the humidity content will continue to prevail in the atmosphere owing to the monsoon season, has drawn serious concerns from various quarters, as it is perfect for the survival of the H1N1 virus.

Director of National Institute of Virology (NIV) Dr A C Mishra said that the conditions are perfect for the virus to survive for a longer period.

The city has witnessed the country's first swine flu death and has registered more than 100 cases in the last fortnight. The present situation has cases admitted in Naidu and Aundh hospital as well as two serious patients admitted in the special ward at Sassoon General Hospital.

"In the present condition, it is very difficult to contain the spread," he said. In the last three months, the virus strain has spread to 150 countries in the world, which shows the fast spreading of this strain.

“Fumigation cannot help, but masks can help restrict the droplets being inhaled,” he said. The NIV has been constantly examining samples of swine flu patients in the state and has additional laboratories and 50 persons working round the clock to conduct the tests. "We are doing our best with the experts we have in the country,'' he said.

A general practioner Dr Tushar Chaudhary practicing in the Aundh area said that Pune is known for its rising pollution levels and there are several respiratory disorders in the city. "The new strain will only increase and the present condition will only multiply. There should be less gathering at public places-such as malls, theatres and all schools should be closed down," he said.
