‘Hurt’ BJP talks tough on Nitish

With its Bihar leadership indicating its willingness to sacrifice the alliance with the JD(U) for the sake of self-respect,the BJP top brass on Wednesday once again talked tough.

With its Bihar leadership indicating its willingness to sacrifice the alliance with the JD(U) for the sake of self-respect,the BJP top brass on Wednesday once again talked tough. It reiterated to its alliance partner that it would not brook any pre-conditions for the continuance of the tie-up,even though it was in favour of the two sticking together. Sources said senior leader Venkaiah Naidu, who emerged as the interlocutor, conveyed the sentiments to JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Wednesday.

At BJP chief Nitin Gadkari’s meeting with the party’s Bihar leaders, there was much anger against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, sources said. “Some of our leaders complained that Nitish Kumar acts like a king and treats them as poor cousins. They do not want the party to be seen as compromising on its self-respect,” a senior leader said.

While Gadkari will consult other Central leaders before taking a final call on the fate of the alliance,Naidu said the BJP would, nevertheless, not like to break ties with the JD(U). He said the BJP and JD(U) are “keen to run a good government and serve the people”. He,however, stressed that the return of the flood aid money given by the Gujarat government had “hurt” the party. Though the JD(U) has not officially conveyed to the BJP that Modi and Varun should not be fielded for campaigning,BJP sources said this was an issue with some of the middle-level leaders of the JD(U) and needed to be addressed. “Nobody has put any conditions and there is no question of accepting any such conditions,” Naidu maintained.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain also maintained that the party wanted to continue with the coalition for the development of Bihar but would not compromise on its self-respect. “We have not heard any conditions from Sharad Yadav or Nitish Kumar. And even if such a condition is laid down (by JD-U) we will not accept,” party spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.
